  • ¿Por qué dicen los ashkenazim "el shul" y no "la shul"?

¿Por qué dicen los judíos "el shul" en vez de "la shul" si es femenina la palabra en ídish y también "escuela" lo es?

  • Why does my answer disappear when I log out?

I posted a response to a question. (You can actually check out my profile and see it under Answers.) But even though it's listed under my Answers, the answer itself does not appear, except to myself when I'm logged in. If I'm logged in, it displays fine, and lists the question as having 2 answers, but to everyone it says there's only 1 answer. But it's still listed under questions I've answered.

I received no e-mail or any sort of violation notice, so I don't really know to whom I'm supposed to appeal... Just bug the Y!A team?

  • What is the EXACT speed of light in miles?

How many miles a second does light travel in a vacuum? All the conversions I've seen/tried crap out after 10 or so decimal places, and I'm too lazy/dumb to do it by hand. So what's 299,792,458 meters in miles, calculated to its final (?) digit?

Bonus points for also expressing it as a fraction whose denominator is a power of two!

  • How do you say "Please speak Hindi / Urdu to me"?

How do you write "Please speak Hindi to me" in Hindi and "Please speak Urdu to me" in Urdu? I haven't learned imperatives or indirect objects yet. :)

  • Can malware disable Safe Mode, the BIOS... or the keyboard?

After surfing around for a while, I rebooted into a Linux live CD, then back into Windows... after I saw a fake "anti-virus" program pop up when I returned to Windows, I knew I'd caught something. I went back to Linux, read up on Antivira AV and thought I had a pretty good idea of what it took to uninstal it. After starting Windows again, I realized I still wasn't clear on the last few steps for removal, so tried going back to the boot menu... but to no avail!

If I restarted the computer in the middle of booting, I got the "Windows did not shut down correctly" message.. but the arrow keys would not respond, and I could not choose Safe Mode. Neither could I get to the menu to select a boot device, nor go into the BIOS. After restarting, the computer would give an additional beep - something it doesn't usually do after leaving the BIOS - and jump right into Windows. It seems like that logo screen for the BIOS doesn't stay up as long, either, being "cut off" before beeping and booting off the first available drive. And I noticed that the usual Caps/Scroll/Num lights wouldn't flash or respond to Num Lock pressings.

Now I've disconnected the hard drive, but still, though it will boot off a live CD, I cannot select any boot device, it just starts by default. I can't get into the BIOS, and once in the splash screen for the Linux CD, with boot options, the keyboard will STILL not respond! No arrow keys, no nothing. But once I've booted into the OS off the CD, I can type a paper, F-keys, activate Num Lock - the keyboard will act fine, no problem.

Has this program really fried the BIOS? If so, is there any hope if I disinfect the HD, or do you think it will get reinfected? Will I need to get a new motherboard to ever manually select a boot drive or get into Safe Mode again?

  • Where can I watch Super Bowl XLV in Hindi?

Last year ago the NFL issued a press release saying all the languages the Superbowl was going to be shown in... including Hindi. This year they haven't mentioned any specific languages, but they count "over 30," so I have to imagine Hindustani will be among them.

Even if it's not a live broadcast, or if it's only radio and not TV, SOMEONE must be broadcasting Super Bowl 45 in Hindi. Where?

I want to see it with a friend (a शिकागो supporter, alas) who speaks Urdu, and I would guess the match commentary for American football isn't going to be in شده ہندی. ;-)

  • Did anybody see that Greek sign in the crowd at the Giants - Phillies game Saturday night?

Does anyone have Game 1 of the NLCS on TiVo, can you get a screen cap or something? I noticed it in the later innings, someone sitting behind the plate held it up. They were kind of waving it, though, so I couldn't get a good look at it. Did it actually say something in Greek, or was it just like Symbol font? I thought I read "Φηλλη" but I don't know Greek, so I'm not sure.

  • Is "an habitual" accepted usage in the UK?

I know there is some vacillation in the States over "an historic," which sounds completely odd to my ears, but is firmly established in formal usage. But what about "a/an habitual" in Commonwealth English? Is this a marked, H-dropping usage, or a perfectly acceptable, inconspicuous phrase among educated speakers in England?

  • How do you say "4th Sunday of the month" in Haitian Creole?

I keep getting people saying "katriyèm dimanch di mwa," but that sounds too French to me; does Kreyòl even have a word "de"? (I had to look up the spellings in a dictionary, but that's what people have been telling me verbally.) One person suggested "katriyèm dimanch la mwa," but what about "katriyèm dimanch nan mwa" (as suggested by Google :-/ ) or just "katriyèm dimanch mwa?"

  • How do you say "lá ḟéile Pádraig sona duit" in Hindi/Urdu?

Roman Urdu is great, but 10 points for a native Hindustani speaker familiar with Catholic doctrine who can write it in Urdu as well. ;-)

    Gracias.

  • Can the A’s-Tigers/Giants games at the Tokyo Dome be seen in the U.S.?

It looks like the Athletics’ll broadcast the games on the radio, but is there any way to watch the exhibition games against the Hanshin Tigers and the Yomiuri Giants on TV in the States? I know Dish Network has TV Japan, which carries NHK programming, and I think NHK shows some Giants games... (?) but what about the Tigers?
