At 23 years this is a little below average. However, it is not unheard of. The rank of SSgt is E6. It is possible to advance to E-9 by this time. If he is a good guy go for it.

No. Most people who do 23 years are one to two ranks higher than that. If he is still a staff at 23 then he isn't doing his job well.

Wait, are you talking about the British or American military? Pending that explanation, the answer changes.

Some pretty tonk answers on here so far.

Assuming he is British Army. He could have done better, could have done worse. SSgt is not a bad rank and the pension isn't too bad either. Put it this way, we wouldn't be an SNCO in the 1st place if he was rubbish.

Some people might be higher rank after that time, but maybe your fiance likes his current job. Not veryone wants to just get as high as they can.

not really sorry normaly after the rank of sergeant one becomes a warrant officer class2 and then maybe an r.s.m warrant officer class 1 making some1 a staff sergeant is like saying your not goof enough to be a warrant officer

Not in the US Army it isn't. It's actually impossible, unless he was in the National Guard or Reserves!

Why is he worried that he should be a higher rank? If not why are you asking?

No, your fiance is a moron. In 23 years he never managed to go to college, even though it is free, and try and be an officer? Even worse, in 23 years he could not make it higher than the enlisted rank? I worked with 20+ year service members who could only achieve the rank of E-6. Guess what they all had in common? They were morons.

It just means he only served his country and never tried a real officer training to be no higher. My step brother in-law is that rank. They just never tried to move up higher for some reason or another.

Shame on you for marrying a man in the war machine.
