What is a good, traditional Bavarian restaurant in Munich, Germany?

What you have in mind is a 'Gastwirtschaft' that can be found easily at the different "Biergarten" all over town. An indication that a place is good and not touristy ist that there are large crowds but the menu is in German only. Normally, no reservation is required. Most of the Bavarian style downtown restaurants and even the famous Hofbräuhaus are not so bad or pricey at all because bavarian food is quite simple and basic. An alternative to Hofbräuhaus could be "Weißes Brauhaus" in Tal near Marienplatz. A little more upscale is "Aumeister" in the park "Englischer Garten". Try also "Löwenbräukeller", "Hofbräukeller" or "Augustinerkeller" or any of the Gastwirtschaften. If is called Restaurant is might be more expensive.

Munich is really a huge city with: restaurant, nightlife and accommodation results, with hotelbye , you could have a look. Munich may be the capital town of Bavaria and the third-most populous town in Germany. For generations the seat of the Dukes, Electors, and Leaders of Bavaria, the Munich Residenz is without a doubt among Europe's most spectacular palaces. Organized about eight big courts, the huge resident complicated comprises three main parts: the Königsbau, fronting in to Max-Joseph-Platz; the Alte Residenz, facing Residenzstrasse; and the Festsaalbau (Banqueting Hall) overlooking the Hofgarten. The first part of the big complicated to be created was the magnificent Antiquarium, built in 1579 and today the main exceptional Residenz Museum. Munich is just a town with lots of history, be sure to discover it whole.

I've never been to Europe; and am responding only to make a suggestion, should you have the time and any superfluous Deutsche Marks(or are all currencies there, "Euros" now?)

Bayreuth which I don't believe is really very distant from Munich, might prove to be an interesting side trip for you. It's the location of the most unique opera-house and music festivals in the world:

The opera-house, the "Festspielhaus", was designed and the construction of which was overseen by the composer whose idea it was to build, was Richard Wagner. It's unique design and acoustical qualities are here described by his grandson, Wolfgang Wagner:

But I would counsel you to not even think about tickets for one of the performances. The last time I checked, there was a 10 yrs. waiting list; and opening nights - $4,000 per seat /// all other performances - $1,000.

Looks like the "TD" trolls are having a field day: poor pathetic creatures.

Hofbraeu is definitely too touristy. Bad food, overpriced, bad service.

Bayrischer Hof is nice but could well be one of the most expensive restaurants in Munich.

I like to go to Paulaner Keller (between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz on main shopping street).

In summer time, go to any of the beer gardens. Food is not sophisitcated, but definitely very Bavarian.

Another good place to go is to the Loewenbraeu Keller at Stiglmaierplatz. Great place, great food, great beer garden in summer.

You should at any rate go to

HOFBRAEU in Muenchen.
